The detective had to have known if he was investigating this case that his involvement with Valerie Fox would be divulged. Marian had a plan for if he pushed things too far with Simone. He’d already visited Marian one too many times, and Eli had warned her not to say too much.

Why did I talk about the chickens?

If the detective tried to exhaust Simone into forfeiting information that was none of his damn business, Marian would call that other cop, Sharpe, and tell her everything—the whole sordid love story of Lucas Kapinos and Valerie Fox.

Well . . . not the whole truth . . . but her version.

Marian would make a claim that the detective was harassing Simone, a mentally compromised woman whose testimony was not in any way reliable, and then she’d ask that he be removed from the case.

Marian had checked the state laws after he’d left last night, and even though Luke and Valerie’s courtship had been over twenty years ago, it could still be considered a conflict of interest, especially in a double-homicide investigation.

Her task for the day was to confirm Luke hadn’t paid Simone a visit and to see if Valerie had been by to inform Simone of Christian’s accident. If Valerie hadn’t been, then the insurmountably painful task would become Marian’s duty. She’d fretted all morning on how to deliver the news.

Eli had said the hospital was crawling with cops and that Christian’s accident was being investigated as a murder. His inside tip at the firm told him the culprit was suspected to be a client of Fox Wealth Management.

After seeing Karl Merrick’s arrest today, Marian couldn’t help but believe the authorities would think it was somehow all tied together.

In Stefan’s eyes, Karl had never been good enough for Valerie even though his family had hailed from Fox Chapel and were in good standing with the community. Marian and Stefan had worked as a team to get rid of Luke, but Stefan couldn’t really say much about Karl.

Although it seemed like he’d wanted to.

It was as if Stefan was dissatisfied with Karl at a granular level that was never put into exact words. He’d said to Marian once, “I just don’t think he’s quite right for Valerie. He lacks wit.” However, when Marian had asked, “In what way?” Stefan had come up empty.

Marian hadn’t formed a negative opinion about Valerie’s husband. She’d never formed a positive one either. He was quiet and often avoided conversation. He didn’t golf, so he never played with Stefan, Christian, Glenda, and Valerie on the rare occasion Stefan took a day off.

There was an instance when Christian had made an offhanded remark about making clients on the golf course, and Karl had responded by saying that the nice thing about his architectural position was that he didn’t have to attract clients. “I don’t chase money. Money comes to me.”

His comment had hit the other men in the family all wrong.

When Karl would stay behind at the house, he’d offer to watch all the children to get out of embarrassing himself.
